Biography

Odysseas Manidakis

Odysseas Manidakis (born July 8, 1993, in Athens, Greece) is a composer and musician currently based in Linz, Austria. He studied composition (BA) at the Ionian University in Corfu with Dimitra Tripani and Joseph Papadatos, and later completed his MA at the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz with Erland Maria Freudenthaler and Christoph Cech.

As a multi-instrumentalist (guitar, bouzouki, Greek lute, piano/synth, vocals), Odysseas is active in a wide range of bands and projects in Austria, spanning from contemporary jazz to indie rock. Somewhere between the contrapuntal genius of J.S. Bach, the wild improvisations of Keith Jarrett, and his childhood memories of the Beatles, he has developed his own musical language – a blend of structure and spontaneity, composition and chaos.

His artistic vision often involves combining different art forms and expressive media. The ecstatic, impulsive elements of jazz and world music, together with the conceptual innovations of contemporary classical music, have shaped the aesthetic character of his compositions. What may seem like unrelated musical styles provide him with creative potential, bridging the gap between score and sound, meticulous composition and spontaneous improvisation.

At the core of his artistic activity lies the belief that music is universal. This mindset allows the diverse sound stimuli of today’s hectic world to infiltrate his work, fueling his aspiration to bring these influences together in a coherent and authentic context both on stage and in his compositions.
